Comparison

Literature Notebook vs Readwise

Choose between a reading capture, resurfacing and sync workflow, and a category-adaptive notebook for analysis and original drafting. Both let you export your work.

Official sources checked 10/20/2026 (America/Chicago). Features and terms may change; sources are linked below.

Read, capture and revisit with Readwise

Readwise Full includes Reader: uploaded PDF and EPUB files, web articles, newsletters and RSS, plus highlighting YouTube transcripts. Daily Review resurfaces highlights, and integrations send them to your notes apps. It is a strong fit when your main task is collecting reading across formats and returning to what you highlighted.

Readwise documents exports to Notion, Obsidian and Apple Notes, alongside Markdown and CSV. Reader documents Markdown annotations and a full-account file ZIP.

Analyze, plan and draft with Literature Notebook

Review and Write are equal workspaces, each covering Fiction, Nonfiction and Scholarly. Review asks questions shaped to the work: character and structure, arguments and evidence, or methods and results. Write offers category-adaptive planning, a section hierarchy and deliberate revision passes.

Basic sources and citations are on every plan. Plus and Studio add tools to choose a saved passage, send it to a project and optionally link it to a draft section. The notebook sits alongside your reading; it is not a replacement for Reader’s file-reading and resurfacing workflow. Category-specific analysis and this sectioned drafting workflow were not documented on the Readwise pages reviewed.

Compare actual monthly and annual prices

Readwise Full is $12.99 per month or $119.88 per year. The annual option is advertised as a $9.99 monthly equivalent, billed annually — not a $9.99 month-to-month subscription. Its official FAQ describes a 30-day trial followed by paid service, with no permanent free plan.

Notebook Free is permanent, with 15 active works and 3 active writing projects. Notebook Plus is $10 per month or $100 per year; Studio is $18 per month or $180 per year. Eligible paid subscribers have a 7-day trial, once per account. Markdown, TXT and full-account data exports, and read/edit access, remain available after downgrade.

Which workflow fits your next project?

If you want articles, newsletters and books flowing into daily highlight review and an existing notes app, consider Readwise Full. If you are building a manuscript or literature review through category-specific analysis and sectioned original writing, try Notebook Free, then choose Plus or Studio if you need source-to-section connections. You can keep a separate reading or drafting tool; no direct Readwise integration is promised.
