Comparison

Literature Notebook vs Nostos

Both tools care about reading and notes, but they start from different places. This page compares the two approaches honestly, with Nostos pricing checked against its official pricing page on October 20, 2026.

Where Literature Notebook is stronger

  • Adaptive analysis pages by category. Fiction, Nonfiction and Scholarly works each get analysis pages shaped to that kind of text — characters and structure for a novel, arguments and evidence for nonfiction, methods and results for scholarly articles.
  • A particular reading-to-writing workflow. Both tools connect reading to writing — Nostos has a Writing Studio with a project/chapter tree and source references. Literature Notebook's distinction is how that workflow is shaped: drafting in a real section hierarchy, with Plus and Studio tools to choose saved passages and optionally link them to draft sections, keeping their locators intact, beside the category-adaptive analysis pages above.
  • A hosted, permanent Free plan. Notebook Free includes both workspaces at $0 with no card — no server to run, no storage to manage, and free exports that survive any downgrade.
  • Universal Search across public catalogues. Search connected public catalogues and indexes from inside the notebook on Studio.

Where Nostos is stronger

  • In-app reading. Nostos reads EPUB and PDF files and plays audiobooks inside the app; Literature Notebook is a notebook you keep alongside your reading, not a reader.
  • Open source and self-hosting. Nostos is open source (source on GitHub), so you can inspect it and run it on your own infrastructure. Literature Notebook is a hosted service only.
